When you think about canned food, you're probably not expecting anything fancy or gourmet, I know I wouldn't. But that's not why they exist. Canned food is great because they don't require refrigeration and can still last a very long time. Some options even have a decent amount of nutrition! You should obviously stick with fresh groceries whenever possible, but canned foods are great when you're running low on time or lack the necessary kitchenware. Too tired to make dinner? Out camping? Apocalypse? Canned is the way to go. Some choices are actually quite delicious too! I personally like pineapples and refried beans. Most of these foods are also safe to eat without having to heat it up. A hot meal is always preferred, but if worst comes to worst and you find yourself without power or electricity to cook, you can at least sustain yourself without having to worry about food poisoning. That's the big upside. Treat canned foods as a backup for emergencies. It may not meet everyone's standard when it comes to taste, but at least it keeps your belly full during tough times. The idea is making sure you at least have some basic necessities. They aren't too pricey either. At most grocery stores, an individual can may cost around a dollar or less. One can will probably last you for one meal, but it's really about portioning. Not starving is the goal! Follow the food pyramid! Veggies, meats, grains, fruit.... there are plenty of choices to make! You don't have to hoard a massive stash, but it is good to keep something stored in case of unexpected events. Hurricanes! Snow storms! Natural disasters! These scenarios could knock out roads and stores. When that happens, getting supplies will be tricky. Just don't get caught unprepared. At the end of the day, canning is still a food processing technique, and eating too much is definitely not good for you. They could be high in salts, sugars, or contain certain preservatives so don't go overboard! Limit consumption, and only use them when you need to. |
